The Botanical Art course is tutored by Marcia Hughes, a renowned local artist and an experienced teacher in this field. The aim of the course is to develop your painting and drawing techniques in Botanical Art with an emphasis on accurate depiction. Flowers, foliage and plants are observed whilst Marcia teaches through step-by-step demonstrations. You will learn through practical exercises and in exchanging ideas with your tutor and other students. Marcia Hughes will also encourage you to work towards taking part in exhibitions.

This course is suitable for people with some experience of botanical art (for intermediate/advanced students).

Tutor: Lucy Smith & Christabel King (covering for Marcia Hughes)

Core Skills
• To develop the fundamentals of drawing accurately for botanical illustration
• To develop observational skills with an aim to render a realistic depiction
• To develop your watercolour painting skills for botanical art
• Colour theory and how to mix colours
• Botanical Art watercolour techniques
• Tonal contrast and textures to create a 3D effect and depict “space” within a plant
• Composition and design to achieve a well balanced result• Development of a personal style

Materials List (not included in the price below)
Materials such as brushes and watercolours will be discussed and explained during the first course and a small amount of paper on the first date will also be available for purchase from the tutor. Pencils: HB and 2H and plastic rubber. Sketchbook A4 or A3, hot pressed watercolour paper, palette, container for water, kitchen paper and a small range of different sized brushes sizes and types to be discussed on first day of class.

Best results are achieved with Professional Quality watercolours. The following basic 9 colours are recommended: (Winsor & Newton brand) Permanent Sap Green, French Ultramarine, Indigo, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Winsor Yellow or Cadmium Yellow, Winsor Red or Cadmium Red, Permanent Rose, Winsor Violet, Neutral Tint.
