Botanical Art: Watercolour and Drawing (Spr23)

Duration: 2,5 hours

Start Time: TUE 2pm or FRI 10am

There are two Botanical Arts classes every week. The one on Tuesday PM is open to beginners and those with some experience, while the one on Friday AM is aimed to those with prior watercolour painting experience.

The aim of the course is to develop your painting and drawing techniques in Botanical Art with an emphasis on accurate depiction. Flowers, foliage and plants are observed whilst Marcia teaches through step-by-step demonstrations. You will learn through practical exercises and in exchanging ideas with your tutor and other students. Marcia Hughes will also encourage you to work towards taking part in exhibitions. This course is suitable for people with some experience of botanical art.

CORE SKILLS

  • To develop the fundamentals of drawing accurately for botanical painting & drawing
  • To develop observational skills with an aim to render a realistic depiction
  • To develop your watercolour painting skills for botanical art
  • Colour theory and how to mix colours
  • Botanical Art watercolour techniques
  • Tonal contrast and textures to create a 3D effect and depict “space” within a plant
  • Composition and design to achieve a well balanced result
  • Development of a personal style

MATERIALS LIST

Materials such as brushes and watercolours will be discussed and explained during the first course and a small amount of paper on the first date will also be available for purchase from the tutor. Pencils: HB and 2H and plastic rubber. Sketchbook A5, hot pressed watercolour paper, palette, container for water, kitchen paper and a small range of different sized brushes.

Best results are achieved with artist quality watercolours. Following recommendation of 6 basic colours: Sap Green, French Ultramarine Blue, Indigo, Alizarin Crimson, Windsor Yellow or Cadmium Yellow, Windsor Red or Cadmium Red.
