Gesture Drawing: Depicting live musicians (1-3 day)
Art Classes
19(-20 or -22) Aug, 10am-1pm
Open to all adults – some general drawing experience recommended.
During the 3-hour class on Monday 19th August, you will be taken through a number of different approaches for drawing people in action. There will be a demonstration of each method then time to briefly practise it using reference images or your classmates (optionally) as models. You will be encouraged to mix and match and adapt the approaches to suit your personal interests and style.
Following this practical introductory course you will have the opportunity to put what you’ve learnt into action by drawing a rehearsing Concert Band (on Tuesday 20th of August) and/or String Orchestra (on Thursday 22nd of August). Availability for these 2 days will be confirmed closer to the time, but do state your preference on the booking form below (eg. book the Monday 3-hour class, and you will be asked about your preference for the Live Music Days). The tutor will be available to assist you on the Live Music Days too.
Musicians are great subjects to draw, because although there will be movement, it tends to be repeated. They offer challenge and interest but within a contained range. Those who can’t attend the orchestra days will have learnt a range of approaches which they can apply to drawing people in action or to capturing figures quickly.
- Fast and slow linear approaches
- Finding flow lines
- Massing and blocking in techniques
- Structured methods to organise your drawing process
- Varying detail and focus
- Making the most of constant movement
