Going into Abstract Painting (3-day)

Open to adults with some previous experience of painting.

This 3-day course will explore painting in different media focusing firstly on objectivity, making drawings, taking photos and making studies. Then, using a range of suggested methods and techniques begin to pair down, change and adapt studies to create a more non representational image.

Reference images will be available and weather permitting outdoor sketching will also be scheduled. The focus of the workshop will be on exploring a range of abstract themes and to link this with your own personal style. We will start with slide projection looking at various artists from the past and twentieth century including, Gainsborough, JMW Turner, John Piper, Ben Nicholson Ivon Hitchin’s and Howard Hodgkin.

Materials (provided to the students)
White Gesso, Sand and sandpaper
slow drying medium for acylic paints

Materials (required by the students)
Recommended items:
• Acrylic Paints and brushes or Watercolour/Gouache paints with white acrylic
• Drawing materials including 2B, 6B, graphite stick or charcoal
• 1 or 2” household paint brush and a large palette or plastic trays for mixing
• Tracing paper, ruler and scissors
• PVA glue, Toothbrush, sponges, and a palette knife, some old newspapers
• Suitable Paper for painting on, board or canvas of your choice, A3 or larger
• Sketchbook and rubber Other useful items but not essential:• White Gesso, Sand and sandpaper
• phone camera or tablet
• slow drying medium for acylic paints
• folding chair or seat for outdoor and indoor sketching

Bob Meecham is an artist and teacher. He taught for many years for Kingston, Surrey Adult Learning and the Landmark Art Centre in Teddington
