Introduction to Bookmaking (1-day)

Art Classes & Workshops

26 July: 10am-5pm

Open to all adults – no experience required.

In this full day participants will learn how to make a selection of notebooks, all suitable for the absolute beginner. However, participants must be confident in using a scalpel with a sharp blade.

The morning session will introduce participants to basic bookmaking techniques and how to use specialist bookmaking tools. We will make a simple pamphlet with a laminated cover and a double section notebook with an integrated cover.

In the afternoon we will build on the techniques learned in the morning session to make a single section, hard backed book.
There will be a 1 hour break for lunch (not provided).

Materials
All materials and use of specialist tools are provided. However, please bring along the following:
• A clip point shoe knife (like ‘Faithful’ brand) or equivalent, suitable for cleanly slitting folded paper
• A cutting mat (preferably A3 or A2)
• A steel safety ruler (preferably either cork backed or the ‘M’ shape)
• We will be using glue, so an apron may be useful.

Tutor
Gill Smith
