Turkish Traditional Ceramic Painting Course

Art Classes & Workshops

Date: 17 April 2023 - Mon 12 June 2023

Supporting the Turkey Earthquake Emergency Appeal through Ahbap Association.

Open to adults – no experience required.

Discover Iznik tiles pattern and learn the history of the classical Turkish art of tile painting from artist Nagihan Seymour. Iznik pottery is named after the town of Iznik in western Anatolia where it was first made. From the last quarter of the 15th century until the end of the 17th century, this decorated ceramic was one of the most important decorative materials embellishing Ottoman structures ranging from palaces to mosques.

During this course, you will first be introduced to all the materials and their uses. After becoming acquainted with the materials, you will be shown painting techniques in the Iznik style and will paint your own 10×10 cm tile and in the second part of the course you will paint a cylinder vase (19cm length) using suitable Iznik or Babanakkash motifs.

Following the class, the instructor will glaze and fire the finished works in the kiln. The attendees will be able to collect their work from Landmark Arts Centre once they are ready. Please understand, whilst every care is taken in firing your work, please remember that ceramics can be subject to cracking during firing.
