Life Drawing and Painting (Spring)

Open to adults with some life drawing experience – painting experience isn’t required.

Project: The figure in colour
Participants will work from easels with a life model present for all sessions. Working mainly in watercolour, you will gain confidence in handling paint and develop a practical understanding of colour theory. A variety of methods will be covered, ranging from gestural and experimental to a more analytical and considered approach.

Course projects give students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of drawing through regular study of a life model. We accept a maximum of 10 participants for our Life Drawing courses allowing the tutor time for individual attention.

Core Skills
· Objective and traditional observation methods
· Depicting tonal values and observing light and shade
· Handling watercolour using wet in wet and wet on dry methods
· Exploring how to mix flesh-tones using the primaries
· Understanding basic colour theory and its application
· Learn to develop your own creative response and style

Materials
A range of pencils: e.g. H, HB, B, 2B, 4B and a pencil sharpener, bulldog clips, box of mixed size willow charcoal sticks, putty rubber, A2 cartridge paper, minimum of 2 coloured pencils, approx 6 sheets of A3 or A2 tracing paper, pad of good quality A2 cold-pressed watercolour paper (recommend Bockingford or similar, advise against Cass Art watercolour paper) medium or large palette, 3 watercolour brushes, recommend small fine brush approx size 2, medium brush size 5 -8 and one large flat or round-headed wash brush, watercolour paints: Suggested cadmium red, alizarin crimson, winsor lemon, cadmium yellow, ultramarine blue, cobalt blue, viridian or winsor green.

Optional: Art masking fluid. Any other personally preferred materials. Advice on painting materials will be offered during your first session with your tutor and you may have already some art materials which can be used.
