Life Drawing (Summer)

Previous life drawing experience required. Not suitable for beginners.

Life Drawing: Motion and Multiples
A project-led course exploring different ways of understanding and depicting the human form with a range of long and short poses. A life model is present for all sessions. The project for this course is Motion and Multiples and will include drawing the moving figure, depicting sequences, and drawing groups of figures inspired by famous artworks. We will also look at understanding a pose from several viewpoints. A variety of approaches will be covered ranging from carefully considered analytical drawing to experimental gestural methods.

All model fees included.

  • Objective and traditional observation methods
  • Gestural approaches for capturing a pose quickly or drawing the figure in motion.
  • Creating small crowd scenes from drawings of one model.
  • Learning how to situate several figures in perspective within a space.
  • Looking at Cubist and Futurist approaches and Rodin’s sculptures.
  • Learning to make dynamic creative compositions of several figures
  • Working at different scales.

Materials
A range of pencils: e.g. H, HB, B, 2B, 4B and a pencil sharpener, bulldog clips, ruler, box of mixed size willow charcoal sticks, eraser, A2 cartridge pad and/or any other preferred drawing paper, approx 5 sheets of brown paper (parcel paper is fine), approx 2 sheets of mid-toned paper (e.g. grey or blue), white pastel or conte pencil, white chalk or conte crayon, charcoal, pastel or conte pencils in dark colour(s) of your choice (e.g. brown or black),5 differently coloured pencils, approx 2 sheets of A3 tracing paper.

Optional: Any other personally preferred materials e.g. graphite, pastels, paints, inks, pens, coloured pencils, conte crayons or pencils, black paper and white media etc. Advice on materials will be offered during your first session with your tutor and you may have already some art materials which can be used.

Please bring paper (cartridge is fine), pencils – both graphite and one or two colours, bulldog clips, charcoal, eraser and a ruler to the first class. You are welcome to bring any other personally preferred materials in addition to these if you wish.
