Stone Carving in Relief (2-day)

Art Classes

21-22 Aug, 10am-4pm

Suitable for all adults – no experience required.

Create an expressive design in a UK sourced limestone using nature as an inspiration, working over two full days. You’ll use hand tools to carve a multi layered relief image with overlapping shapes, patterns and textures.

You are welcome to bring along pictures of nature or design sketches for a tablet of stone 20 x 20cm – simple images are best. Your tutor will discuss the suitability of these and help you to ensure they are practical for carving. Patterns and design inspirations will be available for anyone who needs an idea. Please note this course does not include letter cutting.

This is a practical, hands-on class with a supportive atmosphere, suitable for beginners with an interest in art or anyone who enjoys working with their hands, as well as people with some experience of stone carving. You do not need any particular skills, simply the ability to hold tools in both hands- a chisel in one, and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other.

Carving will be done standing up if we work out of doors. If this is a problem please let us know in advance so that an alternative work surface or stool can be provided. We hope to work out of doors under the shade of a gazebo.

The course covers two days 10am to 4pm with an hour lunch break. Please bring a packed lunch and snacks with you, or visit any of the many cafes and restaurants in Teddington. Teas and coffees are available onsite.designing a relief
