The art of illumination using gold leaf is an ancient art form that adds an opulent shimmer and richness to calligraphy and watercolour paintings. In this introductory 6-week course, we will demystify the art of illumination using a step-by-step approach and create beautiful gilded floral works of art.

Starting with the initial drawing and outlining stage to gilding with gold leaf followed by painting with watercolours and gouache, we will cover all aspects of the art of illumination. In this course we will also explore monogram designs. This course is suitable for complete beginners. No experience required.

What to expect
– You will learn how to create designs for gilding projects
– You will learn a variety of gilding techniques (flat and raised gilding)
– Learn how to use paint with watercolours and gouache
– Design monograms for gilding
– Incorporate your illuminated letters in a finished artwork
– You will receive detailed handouts with lots of exemplars and inspiration for future projects.

Materials
All materials will be provided, incl. a Beginners gilding kit (worth £50)
