Wellbeing: Beginners’ Bookmaking

Art Classes

Dates
4 weeks from 08 January 2024
08, 15, 22, 29 January

Open to all Adults (18+) – no experience required. Participants should be confident using sharp objects such as needles and scalpels.

From zero to hero! These classes are suitable for the absolute beginner. We’ll take things at a gentle pace, but by the end of these sessions participants will have a thorough understanding of basic bookmaking terms , kit & techniques and will have made at least 4 different simple book structures.

Week 1
• How to fold & manipulate paper for bookmaking using specialist bookmaking tools
• Making a simple folded notebook (no sticking or sewing)
• Making a simple pamphlet with laminated covers
Week 2
• Making a double section pamphlet with integrated cover & optional pocket
Week 3
• Making a simple stab binding notebook
Week 4
• Making a concertina book with hard cover

Materials
All materials will be provided and specialist bookmaking tools will be available for use in class each week.

However, each participant should bring the following:
– an A3 cutting mat (smaller ones will be available to use, but your own A3 mat is preferable)
– a metal safety ruler (the best are either cork backed or in a ‘w’ shape which provide a finger guard when cutting with a scalpel)
– a clip point shoe knife (we’ll be cutting paper to size in class so this is a paper knife for tearing the folded pages)
