In these workshops we will be exploring techniques to make textural, wet felted, flat felt that can be used as a background for stitch.
In the morning families session you will have a choice of making either a heart or a flower (for Valentine’s or Mother’s Day). You could then (at home) mount them on a card, or stitch them together and pad them with a bit of cotton wool to make a 3D item.
In the afternoon session you will have the choice of making a more advanced piece incorporating either a heart or flower or creating a more abstract piece.
For this workshop a pack of wool fibres, yarns & threads, buttons and fabric scraps will be provided by the tutor and included in your course fee, but feel free to bring any scraps of yarn or buttons/beads if you wish.
You will need to bring the following items:
· Old large towel.
· Piece of bubblewrap (small bubble type, not large bubbles) ideally no smaller than about 50cm square, but if it is a bit narrower it doesn’t matter.
· Small plastic jug or bowl, big enough to put your work in and to make a soapy solution.
· Water spray/sprinkler – you can make your own from a plastic pint milk bottle or small fabric conditioner bottle. Use a hot skewer to pierce 4 or 5 holes in the bottle lid.
· Bar of soap or soap flakes used for hand washing clothes. Soap should be either olive oil or glycerine, not a type that is very creamy (e.g Dove or Imperial Leather) as it will produce too much lather. Olive oil soap can be bought at most health food shops and zero waste/eco stores.
Optional items to bring if you choose:
· Tape measure, scissors, needles, strong thread.
· Apron
· Plastic bag to take damp work home in.
· Notebook & pen or pencil to make notes
