Creative Sketchbook is a drawing, painting and mixed media course. It would suit participants who enjoy experimenting with different materials and approaches. Sketchbooks are used widely as a reference tool by art students and artists alike and are used to explore and develop creative skills and ideas.

SEPTEMBER & OCTOBER (Starting on September 13th)
Project: Starting a Sketchbook
Creative Sketchbook is a drawing course with an experimental mixed media approach. Sketchbooks are used widely as a reference tool by art students and artists alike and are essential to develop your creativity and improve your drawing skills. Learn how to use a sketchbook effectively and develop approaches to record your own art activities.
For this course a variety of creative techniques are covered to teach you the necessary core skills. It would suit people who are interested in drawing but who also enjoy experimenting creatively with different materials and ways of looking.
Core Skills
• Exploring drawing Experimenting with different media, gestural methods, mark-making techniques, tonal contrasts, shapes, spaces and proportion.
• Experimenting with colour
Developing knowledge of colour theory and experimenting with watercolours, pastels, coloured pencils or felt pens.
• Texture and detail Exploring ways to create texture through a range of mark-making techniques.
• The purpose of a sketchbook
Developing creative visual ideas and how to research for specific art projects.
Materials List
A4 or A3 cartridge hardback sketchbook, collection of drawing pencils (HB, 2B, 6B), eraser, willow charcoal, ruler, glue, scissors, masking tape, white gouache paint, waterproof black ink, watercolour paints, brushes suitable for watercolour. A selection of coloured media which could include: water-soluble pencils or crayons, pastels, watercolours or felt pens.
Optional but recommended: Household sponge, scraps of bubble wrap, small scraps of card from recycling, citrus fruit net, toothbrush, white candle.
Optional: Any other personally preferred materials e.g. inks, pens, other types of paint, conte. A craft knife/ scalpel and recycled papers are sometimes useful. Materials will be discussed during your first session with your tutor and you may have already some art materials which can be used.
For the first lesson please bring one or two objects to draw from. Suggestions (not exhaustive): natural objects e.g. shells, stones, fruit, veg (possibly cut in half), plants. Shoes, hats, travel souvenirs, tools, toys.

Project: Memories and Identity
Creative Sketchbook is a drawing course with an experimental mixed media approach. This course includes working from personal objects and treasured photographs. Amongst other projects you will make a simple sketchbook based on an experience or memory and create images using simple and experimental printmaking techniques.
Core Skills
• Exploring drawingExperimenting with different media, gestural methods, mark-making techniques, tonal contrasts, shapes, spaces and proportion.
• Experimenting with colour
Experimenting with watercolours, pastels, colour pencils or felt pens.
• Collage Using photographs and cuttings, an approach to cropping and to collecting reference material for a project
• The purpose of a sketchbook
Developing creative visual ideas and how to research for specific art projects
Materials List
A4 or A3 cartridge hardback sketchbook, drawing pencils (e.g. HB, 2B, 6B), willow charcoal (ideally box of mixed size, otherwise medium sticks), eraser, cotton bud, ruler, black pen, glue, scissors, 3 sheets of A4 or A3 tracing paper, watercolour or gouache paints (any quality), watercolour brushes, craft knife or scalpel, small selection of coloured or decorated papers for collage – can be old wrapping paper or from magazines. A selection of coloured media which could include: water-soluble pencils or crayons, pastels, or felt pens. Optional: Monozero pencil eraser (has a useful fine point for erasing/drawing into charcoal), hairspray or fixative, any other personally preferred materials e.g. inks, pens, paints, conte.
*Please bring everything in bold to first session. The tutor will be able to sell you items for the simple printmaking project at the end of the course, the cost shouldn’t exceed £5. Otherwise materials will be discussed during your first session with your tutor and you may have already some art materials which can be used or adapted.
