Exploring Acrylics, Starting Out

An introduction to the techniques of Acrylic Painting. All students and all levels are welcome (beginners and those who want to brush up their skills).

The course is structured using projects that are designed to develop several techniques that can help build confidence in the medium.

Let’s explore acrylic techniques including impasto, texture mediums and glazing. Core painting skills will be covered, from first steps through to finished work and will encompass traditional as well as more modern painting styles.

– Getting to know materials – mixing with primary colours to produce mosaic abstract
– Tonal scales & colour contrasts – working with a limited palette using a toned ground
– Traditional Still Life and including scumbling glazing techniques
– Exploring Textures – Painting without brushes acrylic mediums knives, sponges and card to develop an impasto painting – Practice Buildings, walls and foliage.

Materials
• Pencil 2B, 6B, Charcoal, Small sketchbook, soft kneadable rubber or sometimes called pastel rubber
• Large flat Acrylix brushes large and small, a size 12 and 6 smaller round brush
• Set of Acrylics with palette and water containers
• Several Acrylic boards and Acrylic treated paper, minimum A3 size
• Painting knife plastic or metal and a sponge
• A range of basic acrylic colours (Liquitex , Rowney size approx.75cc) including black and a large tube or tub of Titanium white
• PVA glue

Useful but not essential:
• Tube of Acrylic Retarder
• Acrylic Gesso
• Some images of landscapes, buildings and objects
