Introduction to Block Printing – Summer of Culture 2026

Create colourful, dynamic prints with hand-carved printing blocks.

Join Ahista Stories for Introduction to Block Printing, where you will learn how to use traditional hand-carved wooden blocks from Sindh, Pakistan, with non-toxic fabric inks, in order to breathe new life into clothes or linen you already own.

Using hand-carved wooden blocks inspired by nature and Islamic art – and sourced via facilitator Zainab’s family in Sindh – you’ll get a taste of the rich heritage of Sindhi block printing in this beginner-friendly workshop. Bring your own items to print on or experiment on the scrap fabric provided.

You’ll learn how to: 

Compose a design

Correctly apply fabric ink to wooden blocks print repeat patterns using sets of complementary blocks

Care for blocks and printed fabric

This workshop is suitable for beginners and participants are encouraged to bring their own cotton or linen items to print on.

Ahista Stories is a South Asian sustainable fashion community exploring the relationship between clothing, culture and climate justice. Founded in the UK, the organisation brings people together through workshops, talks, live events and collective action, creating space to reflect on fashion, heritage and more sustainable ways of living.

Rooted in the principles of slow fashion, Ahista Stories celebrates traditional South Asian clothing and craft practices while encouraging mindful approaches to making, mending and reuse. Through hands-on workshops and community events, the organisation supports creativity, connection and learning, creating welcoming spaces that centre cultural heritage, sustainability and collective care.
