Class Overview

This practical six-week course introduces the beautiful art of hand embossing. You’ll learn the fundamental techniques used to create raised decorative designs, experimenting with a range of materials and embellishment methods as you build confidence. By the end of the course, you’ll have produced a collection of original embossed artworks and the skills to continue exploring this versatile craft at home. 

Class Content

  • Introduction to hand embossing techniques
  • Using embossing tools and light pads safely
  • Creating raised designs and decorative textures
  • Working with a variety of papers and materials
  • Embellishing finished pieces using different techniques
  • Developing and completing a series of original artworks

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn the core techniques of hand embossing
  • Gain confidence using embossing tools and materials
  • Create a portfolio of embossed artworks to take home
  • Develop the skills to continue embossing independently

Materials & Equipment

Students should bring a notebook and pen if they wish to make notes.

What to Wear

Comfortable clothing suitable for seated craft work. No specialist clothing is required. 

About the Tutor

Nicci Hicks is a South West London-based illustrator and designer specialising in hand-drawn illustration and dry embossing techniques. Her practice combines detailed line work with raised paper designs, creating tactile artworks inspired by nature, botanical forms and personal stories. Alongside producing bespoke commissions and paper-based artworks, Nicci leads creative workshops introducing participants to embossing and decorative paper techniques. 

Her teaching encourages close observation, experimentation and confidence in working by hand, creating supportive environments for beginners and developing makers alike. Sustainability and thoughtful craftsmanship are central to her practice, reflected in both her materials and making processes.
