Class Overview
Discover the rich possibilities of oil painting in this practical course for beginners and developing artists. Through guided exercises and creative experimentation, you’ll explore colour, composition and painting techniques while learning how to handle oil paint with confidence. By the end of the course, you’ll have developed your own style and created a portfolio of original paintings to take home.

Introduction to oil painting materials and studio practice
Colour theory inspired by Josef Albers
Mixing warm and cool colours
Creating form through tone and light
Sight-size drawing and observational painting
Working with texture, glazing and scumbling techniques
Developing composition and personal style

Understand the fundamentals of oil painting materials and techniques
Mix colour confidently and use tone to create depth and form
Develop observational drawing and painting skills
Experiment with a range of painting styles and approaches
Produce a small portfolio of finished oil paintings

Oil paint (set of SW Seawhites 12 × 12 tubes Oil Paint)
Paper tear-off palettes
What to Wear
Please wear old clothes or bring an apron, as oil paint can stain.
About the Tutor
Charlie is a painter working in both representational and abstract modes, his work includes portraits, landscapes, traditional commissions and experimental printmaking processes. He was trained at Charles Cecil Studio and he also studied at Goldsmiths. He has previously run creative workshops for Elephants Academy, Goldsmiths, Sluice, SPACE Studios and Staffordshire Street. He is currently part of Threadbare Collective.
