Stone Carving in 3D (3-day)

Art Classes & Workshops

7-9 August: 10 am-4pm

Book Place

Open to all adults – no experience required.

Create a sculpture in the round carved in Maltese limestone using nature as an inspiration, working over three full days. You’ll use hand tools to carve a three dimensional design of an animal, bird or nature inspired abstract with curving forms and interesting textures. You are welcome to bring along nature images or design sketches for a piece of stone 25 x 15 x 12.5cm (10 x 6 x 5”).

Amanda will discuss the suitability of these and help you to ensure they are practical for carving. This is not essential though – prepared patterns and photos for inspiration will be available for anyone who needs an idea.

Please note this course does not include letter cutting.

This is a practical, hands-on class with a supportive atmosphere, suitable for beginners with an interest in art or anyone who enjoys working with their hands, as well as people with some experience of stone carving. You do not need any particular skills, simply the ability to hold tools in both hands- a chisel in one, and a dummy (stonemason’s hammer) in the other.

Carving will be done standing up if we work out of doors. If this is a problem please let us know in advance so that an alternative work surface or stool can be provided. We hope to work out of doors under the shade of a gazebo if permission can be obtained, or in the upstairs art studio.

The course covers three days 10am to 4pm with an hour lunch break. Please bring a packed lunch and snacks with you, or visit any of the many cafes and restaurants in Teddington. Teas and coffees are available onsite.

Core Skills
• Creating a design suitable for carving and making paper templates
• Creating a small clay model for reference
• Using a pitching tool to clear away waste
• Roughing out the form with a point
• Refining shapes with a claw tool
• Using a riffler to smooth your design and add detail
• Tips for setting up a workspace at home

Materials
Stone, tools, and safety equipment will be provided and are included in the price of the course. Please bring an apron and wear old clothes and stout shoes which cover your toes and protect your feet.
