Basketry: Willow Bird Feeder

10am – 12.30pm

Eleanor is a local craftsperson working in green wood and willow. Originally trained as a fine artist, she was initially drawn to textiles, especially patchwork, embroidery and knitting with a particular interest to their historical context. However, after a 20 year career in social housing an interest in natural, sustainable materials developed. She started making baskets about eight years ago following a weekend workshop and has been developing her technique since. She has a particular interest in traditional English basketmaking techniques.

Eleanor sources much of the wood she uses locally, including her allotment in Twickenham, where she also grows a small amount of willow she uses in her baskets. She sells her work at local markets and fairs as well as online. Take a look at Eleanor’s website for inspiration.

Watercolour: The Drybrush Approach

10am – 4pm

On this course you will explore the dry brush approach to watercolour, a method employed by early 20th century British artists including Eric Ravilious and Paul Nash and by the American artist Andrew Wyeth. The course will focus on Ravilious’ work in particular.

The approach involves using a barely moist brush and building the strokes up in layers. It offers excellent scope for exploring varied mark-making. As an approach it is more closely related to drawing and wood engraving than free-flowing wet-in-wet watercolour, although the two approaches can work beautifully when combined. As the course progresses students will be encouraged to experiment and adapt the approach to suit their personal preferences.

Sketchbooks can be used for experimentation and to explore a theme or idea in a variety of ways. Although still life will be our primary subject matter on this course, the approaches explored can be applied to any subject or theme.

We will start with traditional observational skills, before experimenting with colour, composition and mark-making, and taking inspiration from different artists and art movements including Cubism. This course would suit people who are interested in drawing but who also enjoy creatively experimenting with different materials and ways of looking. You will end the course with lots of new ideas to apply to your own sketchbook or art work at home.

You will be working from your own objects and (due to Covid restrictions) from a range of photos of still life set-ups.
