We are delighted to be joined by two women whose debut novels have won audience approval and numerous awards; Lucy Barker and Liz Hyden.

Join us for a chance to hear from these authors, who have both set their tales against the backdrop of Victorian England. They will discuss their research, their challenges and their love for the work. You can expect live readings from their best-selling books, The Otherside of Mrs Wood and The Gifts. Plus, discussion, laughter and cocktails from the pop-up mixing
station we are adding in JUST for this event. Then it’s your chance to ask questions about the books, the stories or the process of writing and researching the books.

Do not miss this opportunity to meet, purchase a book and have it signed by the author herself.

Early arrival is recommended. Pre-drinks  will be available to purchase on the night from 6pm. No pre-reading is required!

Lucy Barker was the Curtis Brown First Novel Prize runner-up with an early extract from The Other Side of Mrs Wood. She holds an MA in Victorian Studies from Birkbeck College and is a Curtis Brown Creative and Novelty alumna. Lucy worked for years as a PA in theatre and heritage, including coordinating the Solstice celebrations at Stonehenge. She is also a good friend of our Director, Harper, who has suggested that a cocktail bar would be just the thing for this event (and Lucy agreed..almost too quickly!) So a world of spirits and salon society will be in the pages of the book and in the Landmark. However, our spirits are definitely genuine!

The Otherside of Mrs Wood by Lucy Barker : Mrs Wood is London’s most celebrated medium. She’s managed to survive decades in the competitive world of contacting the Other Side, has avoided the dreaded slips that revealed others as frauds and is still hosting packed-out séances for Victorian high society. But her audiences are no longer satisfied with the knocking on tables and candle theatrics of years gone by. And then, at one of Mrs Wood’s routine gatherings, she hears something terrifying – faint, but unmistakable: a yawn.

‘ Gorgeous, an utter delight’ MARIAN KEYES

‘A charming debut that sparks with fun and fizz’ GOOD HOUSEKEEPING

‘ A must read!’ SOPHIE IRWIN

‘novel to devour in 2023’ DAILY MAIL

The Gifts by Liz Hyder : Waterstones Book Prize winner Liz Hyder comes a tale of enlightenment, the role of women in society, and the dark danger of ambition, all set against the luminous backdrop of nineteenth century London.
