Class Overview:
Discover the beauty, symbolism, and tradition of Chinese painting in this hands-on course suitable for all levels – from curious beginners to experienced artists. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to deepen your skills, you’ll explore the expressive relationship between water, ink, and paper while learning the graceful strokes and meanings behind Chinese characters.
Through guided practice, you’ll create your own original artworks combining calligraphy and painting, while gaining a deeper understanding of Chinese culture and aesthetics.
What you’ll explore:
- The foundations of Chinese calligraphy and brush painting
- The harmony between water, paper and ink
- The form, rhythm and meaning of traditional Chinese characters
By the end of the course, you’ll:
- Feel confident using authentic Chinese painting and calligraphy tools
- Complete a unique piece combining calligraphy and brush painting
This course is for:
- Complete beginners
- Artists with some calligraphy or painting experience
- Those at an intermediate or advanced level looking to further their techniques
Materials:
All essential materials are provided. This includes rice paper, ink, brushes and colours.
Students should bring two small containers for water/ink and some newspaper for your workspace. If you’d like to continue practicing at home, the tutor can also advise on where to purchase materials such as rice paper and ink.
What to wear:
We encourage you to wear dark clothing, as ink can stain.
